Toxoplasma gonddi is and obligate, intracellular, protozoan parasite with a worldwide distribution. it is capable of infecting all warn-blooded animals. T. gondii is as related protozoan genera that can cause encephalomyelitis in livestock, companion and laboratory animals. Although evidence that T. gondii causes neurologic disease in horses is not well definite. The Pantanal is a large wetland region located in the center of south America. Cattle ranching is the dominant land use in the Pantanal region of Brazil. Horses are indispensable to the traditional extensive ranching management system employed in the region. A survey of equine toxoplasmosis was carry out on 15 cattle ranches from the Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. Anti-Toxoplasma gondii reaction was determined by indeirect hemaglutination using a commercial kit. Of the 150 sera tested, only 2 (1.33%) were positive for T. gondii. The positive horses belonged to two ranches where the horses are living close to the owner house. We concluded that horses from the Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul state living at study area are not frequently exposed to oocysts of T. gondii or antibody titers are not sufficiently elevated to be detectable. The risk of acquiring toxoplasmosis from eating horse meat is low. Althoug T gondii may be found in horses, horse meat is rarely eaten by people in the Pantanal. |
